Six euros per kilo of oil. At least for the next ones Average delivery time. It is the agreement reached between olive producers, oil millers and traders that has allowed the unblocking of the olive harvest strike that had been going on for over a week in the Agrigento area. Not only that: obtained also a reduction of one cent per kilo for the milling of olivese (by 15 to 14).
Thus was resolved - at least partially - after strong tensions, a spontaneous protest born in the internal side of the province of Agrigento (Lucca Sicula, Burgio, Villafranca Sicula, Caltabellotta, Calamonaci, Ribera, Sciacca, Menfi) which has seen a growing participation of olive growers caught in the grip of progressive increases between fertilizers, agropharmaceuticals, diesel and energy on the one hand and no certainty on the purchase price of their oil on the other. Here - just for clarification - the supply chain works more or less like this: the olive producer brings the olives to be milled, leaves the miller - merchant with the task of placing the oil in storage and is paid for the due part. Only a small part sells their olives directly. And so, faced with a lack of certainty of the sale price, which obviously the miller - merchant is not able to estimate at the beginning of the campaign - all the more in view of the very certain increase in energy bills, as well as a market that needs to be deciphered - a sort of spontaneous protest was created which saw assemblies in several municipalities in the Agrigento area (as in the photo taken by Ripost), and a growing adhesion of olive growers in crossing arms which has also involved part of the Trapani area.
“It is not the solution to all problems – clarified one of the representatives of the spontaneous committee, John Maniscalco – and in fact our initiatives are going ahead”. But, at least for the moment, the harvest has resumed.
The millers and traders do not want to be considered counterparts, starting with two of the most important entrepreneurs in the area, namely Bon and Barbera. “The producers' protest is understandable and necessary – he explains Michael Bono of the company of the same name – because they see everything related to agriculture grow, while their products remain at a standstill in terms of price. But we are all in the same boat and we have to row together. Certainly politics must intervene, because here we are in disadvantaged areas where it is not possible for many producers to innovate and build new plants. In any case, the year of release throughout the Mediterranean basin gives hope that the price of 6 euros can be maintained. However, we will keep the discussion open ”.
