The consumption of extra virgin olive oil has positive effects on four important biomarkers considered responsible for brain damage in Alzheimer's disease. This is certified by research published in the scientific journal “Journal of Alzheimer's Disease” from which important useful elements are obtained to understand how extra virgin olive oil represents an excellent preventive food against cognitive decline and the risk of developing Alzheimer's.
Italian research
It is a studio that speaks Italian for several reasons: because it is coordinated by prof. Domenico Praticò, neuropathologist atAlzheimer's Center of Temple University in Philadelphia (USA), one of the most authoritative personalities worldwide in the study of this neurodegenerative disease; because it involved a research group from the Universities of Bari and Perugia, represented respectively by professors Alessandro Leone and Maurizio Servili and engaged one in the extraction of olive oil, the other in the related analytical evaluations; because, finally, the extra virgin olive oil object of the research was an Italian cultivar, indeed the most widespread cultivar, namely the Coratin, processed for the occasion in the Agrolio Srl oil mill in Andria.
The effect of Evo on markers of the disease
But let's go in order. The benefits of extra virgin olive oil on brain health, as is known, are well documented by studies that demonstrate how its daily intake prevents cognitive decline e improves the functional connectivity of the brain. Furthermore, there are many preclinical studies demonstrating that the administration of extra virgin olive oil has beneficial effects on the brain pathology of various animal models of Alzheimer's disease and premature aging.
However, the effect of continued administration of extra virgin olive oil on the expression of various markers of neuroinflammation in a brain with Alzheimer's disease it had not yet been well characterized. In this study, using a very accurate analytical approach (so-called microarray), the effects of extra virgin olive oil on the levels of a large number of inflammatory biomarkers were evaluated (cytokines, chemokines and some of their receptors) in the brain of an animal model of Alzheimer's disease. The analysis revealed that extra virgin olive oil controls the immune system by keeping these biomarkers at bay and acting specifically on four of them that are considered responsible for brain damage in Alzheimer's disease. A work, in short, which provides further reason for attention to recommend the use of extra virgin olive oil against cognitive decline.
