Start of the year with a bang for women too fraud in extra virgin olive oil. As the newspaper reports Republic, the Rome prosecutor's office has opened a maxi-investigation for the crimes of food counterfeiting and receiving stolen goods after discovering a trafficking in fake olive oil, derived from seed oils mixed with beta-carotene and chlorophyll. Not only clandestine laboratories are involved, but also the owners of restaurants in the capital who are aware of purchasing sophisticated oil.

For now, the newspaper reports, restaurants 50 who supplied themselves with counterfeit oil. But this would only be the tip of the iceberg with a hidden economy still to be quantified that risks creating customers' health is at risk, especially tourists. The oil came purchased for 3 euros, against an average which today is around 9 for extra virgin olive oil, distributed to the premises involved with a hundred bottles at a time and delivered to them directly with a van.

The fake extra virgin had as its base seed oil of unknown origin and with unknown conservation methods, corrected with beta-carotene (to mask the flavor) and chlorophyll (to change the color). Everything came then bottled with labels bearing the words "extra virgin made in Italy".

Interesting to note from this investigation that in the sights for the first time not only the producer is finished, but the restaurateurs themselves. According to the investigators, in fact, those who purchase a product of dubious origin and at a price that is exaggeratedly below the market price cannot be considered simply naive. Therefore I am conscious buyersi not only of purchasing a fake product, but also of possible damage to the health of their customers. Accomplices in all respects and therefore, in many cases, also accused of receiving stolen goods.
