A few days after the green light from the Puglia Region at two new varieties, one resistant and the other tolerant to Xylella, an important two-day study on the bacterium is planned: the first, next Thursday, in Bari dedicated to the presentation of some of the main research projects on law enforcement actions; the second, the next day, a Gagliano del Capo (Le) with interesting demonstrations in the field.

The initiative is promoted byInstitute for the sustainable protection of plants of the National Research Council (Cnr-Ipsp), a point of reference in over ten years in which Xylella has disastrously landed in Puglia.

The scientific focus

Thursday May 23th, in the headquarters of Villa Romanazzi Carducci in Bari (free entry upon registration), the conference "Xylella fastidiosa: what opportunities from national research projects" will take place starting from 9 am. The event intends to provide a scientific focus on the implementation status of the main national and international research projects.

“11 years after the first discovery of the bacterium on olive trees in Salento – the organizers say – the situation appears particularly complex, with different variants of the bacterium discovered in Europe on numerous plant species. In this scenario, the contribution of research partnerships is fundamental for the development of strategies to combat the spread of the pathogen and to support the phytosanitary authorities called upon to manage phytosanitary emergencies".

The works will be opened by a update on the evolution of the Xylella epidemic in southern Puglia and on the recent findings of the bacterium in the Bari area, to then present two national research projects. The first, named “Omibreed” funded by Masaf aimed at the development of resistant olive germplasm, the second “Reach-XY” funded by the Government to address, with the involvement of excellent research institutions, the various aspects of phytopathy, including the development of curative methods.
This will be followed by a series of interventions aimed at illustrating research in Europe with the participation of Italian and international experts. Of note are those on new technologies at the service of diagnosis, coordinated by the University of Bari Aldo Moro, on the control of the spittlebug vector, led by the University of Turin and for the containment of Xylella fastidiosa and the regeneration of olive growing, coordinated by University of Molise.

The technical visit

The work will continue on Friday 24 May with a technical field visit in the province of Lecce. In particular, in Gagliano del Capo, near the Forestaforte company, what is defined will be presented a virtuous example of collaboration between researchers and stakeholders. Here, in fact, there are structures made available for scientific research: the germplasm conservation field for a genetic improvement program, a greenhouse resulting from a donation from a German technical magazine, a climatic chamber created by Unaprol, a new screen house financed by a non-profit organization. In the same structure there will also be a demonstration of molecular dogs for the diagnosis of infected plants.
