“We need a solidarity pact with large-scale distribution to recognize this year's oil at least a price of 6 euros per kilo”. The president of Aifo, the Italian association of oil millers, Elia Pellegrino (in the picture) launches an appeal to the industrial and commercial market and hopes that there will be an opening in the name of the unity of the supply chain.
“The increase in costs and the low production – adds Pellegrino – are variants that cannot be ignored. For the northern area of Bari, in particular the Bat where 7% of national production is concentrated, largely destined for wholesale, recognize 6 euros per kilo means allowing oil millers to remunerate olive growers with an average of 75/80 euros per quintal of olives and thus be able to cover production costs for both".
The accounts are soon done: with an oil yield of 15 kilos per quintal of olives, the hypothesis of purchase a 6 euros per kilo allows the miller to forfeit 90 €, namely i 75/80 euros for the purchase of olives and 10/15 euros for molenda costs.
“Otherwise – acknowledges the president Aifo – there is no way out. I add: consider the 87 thousand tons of Italian Evo in stock last year which represented a campaign good in quantity and excellent in quality, the right mix between the national oils of the two campaigns, with prices of 6 euros for this campaign and 5 for the past one, would allow un total wholesale price of 5,50 euros per kilo which would not penalize the Italian oil on the shelf compared to that coming from other markets. Because this is the other problem: raising the price of national EVO too much risks becoming a dangerous boomerang for everyone".
