Pieralisi proreactor and ultrasonic crushing are the innovative extraction techniques at the center of a project being studied in Sicilia aimed at improvement of the quality of the olive oil supply chain. The aim of the project is to develop an innovative system capable of providing answers and solutions to the sector through a technologically advanced and sustainable production model, both in the field and in the mill.
In presenting, at i Frantoi Cutrera di Chiaromonte Gulfi (project leader), the study that will be carried out, Dr. Giuseppe Spina, as referent of the project itself (in the picture). he illustrated it thus: “There are two actions that will be developed: on the one hand, the focus will be on development of innovative techniques for the recovery and management of traditional olive groves, with particular regard to canopy management and aptitude for mechanization, in order to be able to exploit the production potential and reduce production costs; on the other side it will point up an innovative process for the extraction of olive oil in the mill so as to improve both yield and quality. The main purpose will be to find the optimal collection point and to be able to use innovative extraction techniques (for example the Protoreactor or ultrasonic technologies for pressing) which allow obtaining a quality oil, both from the point of view chemical and organoleptic".
The partners of the initiative are various farms operating in the area DOP Monti Iblei, where varieties such as la Moresca, the Tonda Iblea and the Nocellara Etna.
Scientific partner of the project is the Crea who will deal with the critical issues related to pests, primarily the fly, and the effects of climate change.
The project will last for two years, will make use of the monitoring of precision agriculture technologies, with the installation of weather huts, soil humidity and temperature sensors and the creation of virtual weather huts in each plot covered by the project. The collected data will be shared on a special platform.
