Tomorrow, Saturday 15 April, at 10.30, in the Carlo Di Leva room of the Circolo dei Forestieri, in via Luigi De Maio, in Sorrento, award ceremony of the 2023 edition of the Golden Siren Award, dedicated to Italian PDO and PGI extra virgin olive oils, organized by the City of Sorrento and the association Italy Olive growing.
To open the morning, after greetings from the mayor of Sorrento, Massimo Coppola, by the president of the Italian Olive Association, Gennaro Sicolo and of the director of the Italian Olive Chain, Julian Martin, will be the roundtable entitled “Discovering the best DOP and IGP oils: Quality, Health and Territory”, which will be attended by the president of the award jury, Raffaele Sacchi, the president of Igp Campania, Raphael Love, the president of the Dop Monti Iblei, Joseph Arezzo and the president of the Dop Aprutino Pescarese, Sitano Ferri. The conclusions are entrusted to the Councilor for Agriculture of the Campania Region, Nicholas Caputo and Mark Cerreto, member of the Agriculture Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, moderated by the secretary of the Sirena d'Oro Prize of Sorrento, Louis Milan. To coordinate the awards ceremony will be John Pipolo, panel leader of the jury, which this year awarded the companies Quattrociocchi (PGI Rome), Mercurius oil mill (PDO Aprutino Pescarese) e Franci oil mill (Tuscan IGP)respectively in the intense, medium and light categories.
Other awards went to the farm in the light fruity category Poppo Dop (Silver Siren – Lombard Lakes Dop), La Torretta (Bronze Siren – Salernitane Hills Dop), Chiaramonte Estate (Great Mention – IGP Sicily), Frantoio San Comaio (Great Mention – Irpinia Hills Ufita Dop).
They stood out for the medium fruity category Podere Grassi (Sirena d'Argento – DOP Chianti Classico), Accademia Olearia (Sirena di Bronzo – Sardinia), Bacci Noemio (Great Mention – DOP UMBRIA – Colli Martani) and Casa di Grazia (Great Mention – IGP Sicily). Again, for the intense fruity category, the jury awarded the company Codmo di Russo (Silver Siren – DOP Pontine Hills), Frantoi Cutrera (Bronze Siren – DOP Monti Iblei), Ciccolella (Great Mention – DOP Terra di Bari – Bitonto), Oil Academy (Great Mention – DOP Sardinia).
Finally, for the Dop/Igp Bio category, atAccademia Olearia (Sirena d'Argento – Dop Sardegna Bio), Az. Buono Podere Ricavo (Sirena di Bronzo – Dop Terre di Siena Bio), Masseria Coste Di Cuma (Great Mention – Dop Terre Aurunche Bio), Costantino Mariangela (Great Mention – Dop Lametia Bio) and Eugenia Gino (Great Mention – IGP Sicilia Bio).
Furthermore, to offer the public the opportunity to learn more about the secrets and virtues of extra virgin olive oil, the organizers have promoted a series of top-level extra virgin olive oil tasting courses. The calendar of events includes lessons from 18 to 28 April, in the Carlo Di Leva room of the former Sorrento Tourist Board. Olive growing, legislation, tasting methodology, chemistry of oils through taste and smell, disciplinary of PDO and PGI productions and food-oil pairing, among the subjects covered by the course.
