Mario Terrasi (in the picture), president of Oleum Sicily – the eldest OP of the island with over 4.500 producers - And director of the FOA – the association of millers adhering to Unaprol – indicates in Saturday September 17 the official start of the new oil campaign. An ideal date, of course, but not accidental, because it is the day of theinaugurazione of the new hyper-technological system of the Cutrera mills.
“A campaign – anticipates Terrasi – which started with great expectations, thanks to the abundant winter rains, then those late spring days with the sirocco winds also created problems for many of the attached olives which dried up and fell. Anyway we hope to reach 30/32 thousand tons in Sicily, in line with the collection of 2020 and with a 25% less compared to last year". The variety Cherry she is the one who suffered the most. Much better there Nocellara from Belize which, being also a table olive, is found in sufficiently irrigated land. They are maintained in the standard production Biancolilla and the other main regional cultivars.
The new oil mill in Cutrera it was said in the introduction. The company of Chiaromonte Gulfi (RG), which has been cultivating olive trees and producing extra virgin olive oil for six generations, has always been a pioneer in the research and development of modern technologies applied to extraction. The new large plant will come into operation on 17 September, during a real one inaugural ceremony with the participation of prestigious personalities from the food sector. It is characterized by machinery – designed together with Pieralisi, world leader in the sector – who are interconnected thanks to the use of 4.0 technology. Each stage of production is therefore meticulously controlled by a series of sensors that intervene to resolve any critical issues. In particular, the presence of an infrared optical sorter, unique in the world applied to the oil sector, allows the discarding of damaged olives or those not considered compliant according to its quality criteria.
“Quality that this year is even more guaranteed by the heat and the rain at the right time” he explains Salvatore Cutrera (in the picture) who adds: “If on the one hand the climatic effects have contributed to reducing the Sicilian olive production potential to 50% compared to the average, on the other hand they seem to ensure excellent results from a sensorial and organoleptic point of view. There is no trace of the fly that could only arrive in November, but this year of 2022 will be a short year and by that date most of the olives have already been harvested and milled".
