It is a beautiful public-private collaboration that deserves to be reported that started a Caneva, in the province of Pordenone, where the Municipality took charge of building and activating one of the northernmost oil mills in Italy. Fully equipped with Pieralisi machinery, was designed by the local authority to support the many small producers present in the foothills of the Livenza who defend an almost frontier olive-growing, but who obviously do not have the means to make such a significant investment. He is enthusiastic about it Mayor Dino Salatin (in the picture) who worked particularly hard to put the mill to work, entrusted on an experimental basis to Tapa Olearia cooperative, which knows Pieralisi plants, having already operated them in its own mills in the Treviso area.
"Beyond 600 quintals of processed olives – explains the mayor – they are a good start. Here with us the prevailing varieties are the autochthonous ones Gorgazzo e White Besides Frantoio e Leccino. More than discreet production, with one yield of 14% , full satisfaction of the producers for having found a structure capable of milling its own olives without long journeys”. In fact, the Caneva oil mill is useful for the closure of the olive production chain of the entire foothills of western Friuli (in addition to Caneva, also Polcenigo, Budoia, Aviano, Fontanafredda and Montereale) due to their proximity and can also involve other municipalities in the eastern part of Pordenone.
“In December – continues the mayor – we will organize a day of open crusher to let citizens know the quality of our productions, but also to encourage olive growing in the territory, through the environmental recovery of hills abandoned over time. For this we intend to program pruning courses need technical-agronomic update. In the structure we also want to realize also a point of sale with local products, tying them to a brand that identifies them with the Pordenone area. We then got involved the schools, we're planning tourist trips with electric bikes, in short, many initiatives to give full centrality to olive growing”.
A study with theErsa, the Regional Agency for Rural Development of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, had highlighted important data and information on olive growing in the area which confirm the goodness of the choice. The area, in fact, boasts a heritage of 15 thousand plants grown on one forty hectares pertaining to one sixty producers, about ten of them professional agricultural entrepreneurs. The production is approx 1.200 quintals of olives, from which about 150 quintals of olive oil are obtained. The production datum leads us to consider, at full capacity, a potential current production which stands at 1.500/1.700 quintals of olives, destined to increase further in the coming years to exceed the 2.000 tonnes.
