“There is great demand for Italian extra virgin olive oil, but there is no supply, because the large mills are not selling, in anticipation of a further increase in prices. Understandable reasoning, but I would like to invite those who enter into these dynamics to pay attention to what is happening around us".
Paolo Mariani, president of Assofrantoi (in the picture), also taking a cue from the new upward quotations of the Bari Stock Exchange, invites us to reflect on what the national olive market is experiencing.
“It is objective – explains Mariani – that, due to the effect of energy and raw material price increases and the crisis generated by the war in Ukraine, there is a consequent increase in the prices of goods and services which is eroding the purchasing power of Italian families. And in this scenario it should be remembered that oil is not a national exclusivity. If the big holders of oil continue to chase an increase in prices, there will be an increasing risk, precisely due to the lower purchasing power of families, that the dynamics of consumption will no longer reward quality, but the lowest price. And on this terrain, Italy will never be competitive with foreign countries. It has already happened in the past, it is good for everyone not to make the same mistake again ”.
