Climate change could put olive oil production in jeopardy tunisia, with a collapse that threatens to reach the 70% by the end of the century compared to the average of the last 30 years. This is stated in a report byNational Agricultural Observatory of the North African country, according to which the rapid increase in greenhouse gas emissions, combined with the heat, could lead the average annual production even to 61 thousand tons. In this last campaign, just to get an idea, the production was equal to 240 thousand tons, inter alia with a decrease of 7% compared to the average of recent years.
The report highlights on the one hand that the olive groves will hardly be able to have 300 to 600 cold hours required for vernalization, on the other hand that the increase in heat waves would greatly reduce production.
Tunisia, based on the latest available data, referring to 2019, has exported olive oil for 459 million euro.
