Olive groves in Italy drop below one million hectares

The olive groves in Italy come down for the first time under one million hectares. The highlights it 7th Agricultural Census of which theIstat released the first data showing a general reduction of farms (down from 1,6 million in 2010 to 1,1 million in 2020) in front of utilized agricultural area in our country – the so-called Or – almost unchanged: 12,5 million hectares in the last survey, just 300 thousand less than 10 years ago.
Le farms with olive groves have reduced by a third, passing in the decade from 900 to 600 thousand. The ha, as mentioned, they fall below one million: to be exact 994.318 against 1.123.330 ten years earliera drop of more than 11%. With these numbers olive growing accounts for just 6% of the composition of the national agricultural area.
Just for comparison with the Spain, the main producer of olives and oil, the Iberian country instead continues its growth in the sector, with approx 2,7 million hectares of olive groves.
A partial consolation is the fact, notes Istat, that the olive tree still remains the most widespread woody agricultural crop in Italy together with the vine, concentrated above all in Puglia, Sicily and Calabria
