Innovative models to improve the profitability of the olive sector, but also to finally start a real recovery of the country, which passes above all from sustainability and climate commitments, in light of the ongoing pandemic emergency and the worrying effects of the conflict in Ukraine which are also changing the procurement processes.

This and much more was discussed during the conference entitled "Environmental schemes, sustainability, carbon credits: what opportunities for the oil-oil supply chain", organized on Friday by Italy Olive growing during the EnoliExpo in Bari.

“We are here to start some reflections – he said at the beginning Julian Martin, manager of Italia Olivicola (in the picture) – on the logics that led to the delocalization of productions that need to be questioned. Just as it is necessary to reconsider the mechanisms that are leading to our country's dependence on supplies, including those of the agri-food sector".

Anastasios Gargalakos, founder of the Greek group Neuropublic – with whom Italia Olivicola is initiating various collaborations on the certification of carbon credits – illustrated the know-how gained around smart farming and digital transformation projects aimed at strengthening the sustainability of Greek olive growing but also of the European economy.

“We are busy throughout the territory with our technicians – he added Gennaro Sicolo, President of Italia Olivicola (in the picture) – to support farms and we are also doing an important job at the EU level for the recognition of carbon credits and to achieve sustainability missions”.

“It is a historic phase – recalled prof. Giuseppe Celano of the University of Salerno – in which the achievement of environmental objectives converges with that of economic objectives. We need to create a system to quickly build a project for a sustainable future”. The figures presented by Angela Mafia they are proof of the existence of many areas in which it is necessary to intervene in order to achieve the objectives.

Saverio Maluccio, CREA researcher he explained that “there are the regulatory bases for starting a market around the remuneration of carbon credits. The Council of Ministers has approved our proposal for a regulation and now the legislative procedure will begin in Parliament”.

“Italy has a competitiveness gap compared to the European context. The rationale is to valorise biomass to reduce the level of CO2 and improve the soil,” he added Filippo Zanella, expert in technology and environmental strategy, talking about the use of biochar as a soil improver.

“We are facing an epochal change. Europe will be the place of sustainability, farmers will be able to make sustainability their brand and guarantee the future of the EU food supply chain” he concluded Pasquale De Francesco, President of the GBS Workshop.
