The Phytosanitary Observatory of the Puglia Region – with a circular dated April 15th, announced that in order to contain and combat the spread of Xylella fastidiosa, must be carried out by 5 May 2024 le surface tillage of the land, i.e. plowing, milling, harrowing or shredding to reduce the juvenile population of the Xylella vector (spitter).

The current climate trend has anticipated the life cycle of the carrier, which is currently at 4th juvenile stage: an optimal time to intervene with mechanical tillage of the land. It is mandatory to work the land in the entire municipal area of Noci, Putignano, Sammichele di Bari, Turi, Villa Castelli, Ostuni, Crispiano, Ginosa, Gioia del Colle, Laterza, Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Mottola, Alberobello, Casamassima, Castellana Grotte, Castellaneta, Ceglie Messapica, Cisternino and Conversano.

Tillage is also mandatory throughout the entire countryside Santeramo in Colle, where an outbreak of Xylella fastidiosa, subspecies Multiplex st26, was identified on two almond trees.

The agronomic practices must be carried out by the owners and managers of agricultural land, competent public and private subjects, even on uncultivated agricultural surfaces, in public green areas, roadsides, canals and state-owned surfaces. Any extensions, in the event of severe weather conditions that make land processing impracticable, will be communicated by the Observatory.
